Chris is a ringer for Tin Soldiers after someone pulled out so I popped over to Dave's and picked up his Tomb Kings army to we could have a game tomorrow night so he has at least had one game with them before he plays in the tourney next weekend. Dave suggested he may be able to come over, watch, offer advice... hrm...
I've only played Tomb Kings once (vs Josh). Lost that game thanks to a disastrously failed Terror check on my Warriors (ld10 thanks to the nearby general) which meant that instead of hitting the flank of a much depleted Tomb Guard unit containing both the King and Heirophant which would have almost undoubtedly wiped them all out and crumbled the rest of the army, they fled into some Ushabti and died horribly (and instantly). Bah-humbug. I didn't really do anything wrong but bad luck scuppered my efforts to finish the Guard off. Instead the Guard finished off my Hammerers taking the Battle standard and Hammerers standard, killing my general and then it was all over. Oh man... those Warriors have a lot to answer for.
Memory is a little hazy but it would have gone something like - Battle standard (1), Hammerers standard with Warbanner (2), outnumber (1), rear (Thunderers into the back of a Bone Giant - long story; it was a messy and complicated massed combat) (2), kills (probably 4-5), rank for Warriors in the flank (3) for a total of 13-14 for combat res vs the Tomb Guard standard (1) and kills (probably 4-5). Would have won by around 8-9. That pops the Bone Giant, the Tomb Guard, probably the King, maybe the Heirophant (if he wasn't already dead), a Scorpion... you get the picture.
Instead I get massacred.
Goes back to that game last night - the best laid plans can be royally screwed over by just plain bad luck. I guess the best players are good enough to mitigate poor rolling with superior tactics and strategy, but it sure was frustrating to know that the only thing I did wrong against Josh was fail a Terror check on 11, needing 10, and that lost me the game.
Still - you can't whinge about bad dice (despite the fact that I seem to be right now :p); it's just something you grudgingly have to accept in this particular game.
